What is Pilates?

Pilates is a system of exercises designed to employ mental focus and discipline to develop the body.  By connecting conscious thought, breath and well-timed muscle firing you will achieve movement that is easeful and feels good.  Joseph Pilates later conceptualized specialized equipment designed not to load the body, but to provide information and support for the muscles and bones in motion.  Emphasis is placed on strengthening and texturizing intrinsic musculature to properly support, yet fully mobilize the skeleton; the core abdominal and spinal strength being the keystone of this, and also in the facilitation of fully capacitated breath. Discovering and developing all parts of your body results in the ability to function as a complete organism, rather than pieces that can feel disconnected and separate from one another.  Your movement and living will become more uniform, balanced and healthy.

Who is Pilates for and what should I expect?

Pilates is for everyone!  The beauty of the system is its expansiveness, broad enough to fit the needs and goals of women, men, the very injured or the very fit.  Pilates is ideal for individuals of all fitness levels and degrees of health, whether you are an able-bodied individual seeking life-enhancing bodywork or recovering from injury or illness.  The results of doing Pilates depend on individual body type, diet and other activities in your life.  However, the manner in which the musculature of the body is toned in Pilates is lovely and unique.  You will feel longer, taller, powerful, energized and more in control of your body.  All of this occurs deeply inside and therefore, radiates uniformly to the outside.  More importantly, your body and movement will shift, becoming supple, mobile and supported in the areas that demand it, and allowing you the ability to better manage or even eliminate many of the aches and pains we all endure.  You should also be prepared for the personal commitment, consistency, and accountability required in both teacher and student necessary for success.

How do I start and how often should I do Pilates?

The best way to begin Pilates is to come in for one session. In this session, you will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of the method and the pieces of equipment. From here, I can assist you in deciding what will serve your physical, personal, and financial needs best. As with any discipline, Pilates is best done 2 or 3 times weekly (but even once a week will make a significant difference) and the more you do it the more you will reap the benefits. However, as affordability is often an issue for all of us wishing to do Pilates, it is my goal to offer you Pilates in the most affordable manner that will allow you to do it often and well.

*For new mothers interested in Pilates as part of post-partum recovery with childcare concerns, please discuss this with me and arrangements can possibly be made for your infant to join you at the studio.
